Statement delivered by Dr. Saeb Erekat, PLO Secretary General, on behalf of H.E President Mahmoud Abbas, regarding the speech delivered by US Secretary John Kerry
President Mahmoud Abbas followed with great interest Secretary Kerry’ speech and reiterated his commitment to a just and lasting peace as a strategic option. President Abbas said:
“The minute the Israeli government agrees to cease all settlement activities, including in and around Occupied East Jerusalem, and agree to implement the signed agreements on the basis of mutual reciprocity, the Palestinian leadership stands ready to resume permanent status negotiations on the basis of international law and relevant international legality resolutions, including UNSC 2334, under a specified timeframe.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the adoption of a Security Council resolution on 23rd December 2016 which states that the establishment of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, have “no legal validity,” constitute a “flagrant violation” under international law and are a “major obstacle” to a two-State solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.

RAMALLAH, December 6, 2016 (WAFA) - PLO Executive Committee Member Hanan Ashrawi Tuesday strongly denounced the Israeli Knesset’s approval of a bill that passed a preliminary reading which would “legalize” the annexation of Palestinian privately owned land and illegal outposts in the occupied West Bank.

In marking the 69th anniversary of the adoption of UN General Assembly Resolution 181 (the Partition Plan) and the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, PLO Executive Committee Member, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi said:
“This anniversary marks an occasion in which the international community decided to intervene negatively, and thus began the tragedy of Palestine. Although the Partition Resolution itself gives the international community the right and power to take action against any party that is responsible for attempts that constitute “any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression” and alter “by force the settlement envisaged by [the] resolution,” it has repeatedly failed to do so or to hold Israel to account.
